History of Nicaragua
The country of Nicaragua is the largest in Central America. Nicaragua features large biological diversity, a warm tropical climate, and volcanic activity, leading to it being a huge tourist destination, especially for American and European people. Unfortunately, tourism makes up the majority of its economy with coffee being its major agricultural export. This means that Nicaragua is one of the poorer countries in Central America, though with the expansion of mining, the economy may turn around soon. However, the country is trying to balance the mining industry with sustaining its beautiful landscape, so the process is a slow one.
Nicaragua was once a part of both the Mayan and Aztec Empires, before the Spanish took over the lands in the 1500s. Prior to Cortez taking the land, it was explored by Christopher Columbus in 1502. Spain started to put up permanent settlements in 1524. It remained under Spanish, and later Mexican, rule until it declared its independence in 1821. However, war still ravaged the land until the election in 1990 when the government settled down and gained control, where it remains to this day.
Customs Information:
Many countries have items that are prohibited or restricted from being imported and exported. These items may include food, pets and medications and customs regulations are subject to change at any time. When traveling to Nicaragua you want to be sure to research all customs regulations. This can be done with your local embassy or the country’s consulate prior to relocating. You can also visit VisaHQ.com, they offer customs regulations for numerous countries.
